“This is about more than expanding a popular school with a Good rating from Ofsted. It is an opportunity to provide high-quality facilities for the entire community. Pupils have been at the heart of creating the vision for the new facilities, and we hope their legacy will be felt for generations to come.”

New state-of-the-art classroom block for pupils at Bedford Academy

The school on Mile Road currently has an enrollment of 1,350 students. The planned extension will allow the school to accommodate an additional 300 children, gradually increasing the total enrollment to 1,800 pupils by 2029. This growth will make it one of the largest secondary schools in Bedford Borough.

The project is being carried out by Ashe Construction through the SCAPE Regional Construction Framework and is managed by Pick Everard for Bedford Borough Council. The new facilities are expected to be completed by August 2025, in time for the start of the new academic year.

Social Value

The recent expansion of the school will add 16 new classrooms, a changing area, a dining area, and a community café. The building is designed to be highly efficient and will achieve Net Zero Carbon in its operations.

The new classrooms will be bright and safe, featuring simple layouts with whiteboards and ICT facilities. Student feedback has been included in the room designs, allowing teachers to move freely around the desks. This arrangement enables closer contact with individual pupils while providing remote access to the whiteboards and the ability to operate PowerPoint presentations to enhance learning.

The extension will provide versatile multi-use spaces that can serve as a community hub outside school hours. Some of the rooms will feature two points of internal access depending on the time of day and user group. Additionally, a landscaped external terrace area will allow secure access to the outdoors from certain classrooms. Community users include football, basketball, and badminton clubs, faith groups, and dance schools. Individuals will have the opportunity to hire the facilities for personal use.

With the diverse community users in mind, the flexible multi-use space will include a kitchen, dining hall, and community café with Wi-Fi, accommodating up to 300 people at one time during evening and weekend activities.

Additionally, Bedford Academy has recently installed a new 3G Astroturf pitch, and four new changing rooms will be constructed to accommodate 180 students, along with referee changing rooms.

A silent study area, staff office spaces, and 300 student lockers will also be included in the expansion. Furthermore, there will be 20 new parking spaces, including designated spots for disabled individuals and four electric vehicle charging spaces. The school will also provide 77 new cycle spaces to encourage sustainable travel.

Ongoing construction work is taking place on the school premises, while regular classes and activities are still being conducted in the main school building. This ensures that students can continue their education without any significant interruptions, despite the ongoing renovations.

As part of the milestone for the steel frame signing, the staff and students celebrated the construction of their new two-storey building by signing a section of the steel frame during a special ceremony.

Additionally, the school recently held a competition to redesign its logo. A year eight student named Ashe won the competition and has incorporated the new logo into the site signage and hoarding.

Sustainability

The two-storey extension will operate to high energy efficiency levels with ‘U Values’ that ensure minimal heat loss through the facade of the building. Ashe Construction will use a special product to coat both sides of the external walls, to provide the airtightness required for Net Zero Carbon in Operation standard. The school will be powered by photovoltaic solar panels installed on the roof to create as much renewable energy as possible, while air-source heat pumps will generate energy for heating.

Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery units will be installed in ceiling voids which will be attached to louvres in the facade to enable air to flow in and out. The heat from the air source heat pumps will be recovered and used to warm the returning air in the colder months.

The external works include the installation of four electric vehicle charging stations.

"We’re very sensitive to the needs of schools when we’re working in live settings so we will bring all our experience to bear on this project for Bedford Academy. We also plan to involve the whole school community in events to celebrate project milestones and will find opportunities to show the pupils, firsthand, the variety of construction-related careers available to them in the future. They’ll be able to see how their new facilities develop and by inviting them to see our team at work, they can find out more about the different roles that work together to deliver outstanding projects.”
