A new four-storey extra care building and the part refurbishment of two 15 storey tower blocks, allowing residents to live independently with flexible care provision.

As part of Nottingham City Homes and Nottingham City Council’s Building a Better Nottingham programme, Winchester and Woodthorpe Courts on Chestnut Walk required extensive refurbishment, including full external wall rendering, brand new windows, upgrades to the heating system, and sprinkler systems fitted to all communal areas and apartments.

Winwood Heights was delivered, comprising of 44 individual units and two weatherproof corridors connecting the extra care facility with the existing tower blocks. A number of new facilities have been provided including a hairdresser, laundry room, IT room, kitchen, carers’ room and assisted bathroom. Also included is care provider accommodation, a sky lounge and roof terrace.

Working in a live environment was a challenge. Residents were living onsite throughout the build. So as not to cause too much disturbance for the residents, no work was carried out before 8am, after 5pm or at weekends for the duration of the project.

All units are highly energy efficient, meaning lower fuel bills and warmer homes for residents. All new build flats are fully accessible for disabled people, allowing older people and those with extra care needs to stay living within their communities for longer.

Community events include residents being involved with raising £500 for the British Lung Foundation. Work experience placements took place on site with people from the local training college. Part of the site team took part in presenting at local schools on topics such as the job roles available within the construction industry. The resident liaison officer produces monthly newsletters and holds coffee mornings on a weekly basis, to keep the residents up to date with the build.
