After Carillion: The Future of Outsourcing

The benefits of outsourcing, and contractors that evidence best practice in the delivery of services, should not be overlooked as a result of Carillion's failings as a business.

We surveyed 1,000 adults living across the UK about their thoughts, a year after the collapse. We also talked with over 50 senior managers across a range of tier 1, 2 and 3 suppliers and subcontractors within the public sector supply chain.

This included engaging with contractors who provide construction and civil engineering services, consultancies who support the public sector and facilities management providers.

As the average Small-Medium Enterprise (SME) working with Carillion lost £5,000, 81 per cent of respondents think there should be a public inquiry, to shed light on the circumstances that led to the contractor's demise and hold those responsible accountable.

The outsourcing model for delivering public services continues to offer sustainable benefits in terms of efficiency, time saving and mitigation of risk, despite the actions of Carillion.
