As demand for new homes continues to outstrip supply, how much of our current stock is considered fit for purpose by today's standards?

Repair and maintenance work on public housing has been on a downward trajectory over the last two decades. According to our latest research, it hit an all-time low in 2018 of £7.1 billion – a £2.2 billion decrease since 1997, despite the number of public sector homes only decreasing by 542,000.

By analysing publicly available data, we have broken down total annual spend from 1997-2018 across the UK's regions and looked at variances in output for Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

A concerning number of people live in substandard homes, which is affecting not only their physical and mental wellbeing, but their quality of life.
