Kettering General Hospital New Staff Restaurant

Framework: Regional Construction framework

Sector: Healthcare

Project Value: £700,000

Social Value generated: £300,000

Work Experience weeks: 1

This was a challenging project with many moving parts due to the work taking place in a live hospital environment. However, I’m delighted that the collaborative-working between the hospital, Jeakins Weir and SCAPE was instrumental in ensuring that the project was delivered on time and to a considerable high standard. As a result, the staff are now benefitting from much-improved break facilities, supporting their day-to-day.

New refreshments and break facilities were delivered for hospital staff at Kettering General Hospital.

Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust enlisted Jeakins Weir to construct new refreshment and break facilities under the SCAPE Regional Construction framework.

The staff requested this project to enhance morale and improve facilities capable of accommodating various shift patterns. The new restaurant was designed in a previously larger rest/break area that has since been repurposed for different events.

Located just 6 miles from Jeakins Weir's Head Office, the project supports local employment and sustainable travel for the project and local subcontractors.

The initiative has been highly successful, improving staff wellbeing and providing a fresh way to relax on breaks.

Outcomes

The current facilities were inadequate for the hospital staff, as they did not remain open late enough to allow night shift employees to purchase a hot meal before beginning their shifts.

Jeakins Weir delivered essential upgrades and created a rejuvenated space for staff to enjoy their breaks, regardless of their shift patterns.

The primary difficulty of the project was operating within an active hospital setting. The sensitivity of the environment and the restrictions imposed by the hospital grounds and construction site made every aspect of the work challenging.

To address this, we developed specialised Health & Safety plans tailored specifically for the hospital. Collaboration with the hospital's Site Manager and our site team enabled us to establish a practical and achievable approach, with protocols diligently implemented.

The project resulted in a well-executed and designed restaurant and break area that fulfilled all the expectations and requirements of the hospital staff. The end users, including the kitchen staff, had a significant influence on the restaurant design by incorporating their needs for catering equipment. Early contractor involvement facilitated timely adjustments.

Performance targets and client-defined goals were achieved, and all subcontractor payments were made within 30 days. The client satisfaction survey yielded a perfect score of 10/10 in all areas, including defect management, with supply chain surveys also scoring 10/10.

Additionally, the project offered a work experience opportunity for a local schoolgirl, Also, £1200 of furniture was saved from landfill and donated to the local YMCA.
