New headquarters for the Department for Education

Conversion of the world-famous, grade II listed Old Admiralty Building into high quality office space for the Department for Education.

The Department for Education (DfE) are consolidating a large portion of their existing office estate, including their current occupancy of the Sanctuary Buildings in Great Smith Street, into a new head office, the Old Admiralty Building.

The world-famous, grade II listed Old Admiralty Building, which has housed famous figures such as Winston Churchill and Ian Fleming, is being refurbished to provide office space for 1,120 people.

The project will see Wilmott Dixon and a local supply chain transform 23,000 m² of space into a modern working environment, including upgrading the building services to introduce new mechanical ventilation and environmental controls. The upgrades will future proof the space for government offices.

Completion of work on the building, which is the backdrop to the annual Trooping the Colour, will allow the DfE to relocate from their current location of Sanctuary Buildings in Great Smith Street.

This reorganisation of Government estate will save the taxpayer significant costs.

The programme has a critical end date for the works of August 2018, so there will be associated challenges of working within a rigid timeframe.

Ensuring the seamless delivery of the enabling works contract and the full delivery agreement is essential to achieve the this.

Asbestos is inherent within the existing structure and has affected sequencing and programming. Undertaking work with care and precision will be key to not disturbing this further.
