"We are delighted to be working collaboratively with our partners on this groundbreaking venture to raise awareness and knowledge about the opportunities that fusion energy, science, and technology will bring to our communities.”

Cllr Jonathan Slater,

Deputy Leader of Bassetlaw District Council

Last year, we were thrilled to open the doors to the world's first Fusion Energy Café, developed in collaboration with Lindum and Lungfish Architects. This unique, not-for-profit café is located at The Bridge Skills Hub in Worksop and is designed to inspire curious minds about fusion energy.

Created in partnership with the UK Atomic Energy Authority and Bassetlaw District Council, the Fusion Energy Café seeks to engage the public with interactive displays and themed décor related to fusion energy science.

It will host community events that highlight job, business, and social opportunities, particularly in light of the upcoming prototype commercial nuclear fusion reactor at West Burton Power Station.

The café was built by Lindum using the SCAPE Construction Framework, with interior design by Lungfish Architects for the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) and Bassetlaw District Council.

The purpose of the project was to transform part of The Bridge Skills Hub into a café inspired by fusion energy science, featuring an interior design that reflects the inside of a tokamak.

The café aims to engage visitors with interactive digital displays and themed décor. Additionally, it seeks to raise awareness about the potential of fusion energy and its role in shaping a sustainable future. The café will serve as a connection between the community and the evolving fusion industry, providing opportunities for people to interact with cutting-edge science.

We conducted value engineering and collaborated closely with the client to develop a scope and design that stayed within budget. This was accomplished with the assistance of Lungfish Architects, who were working on the Interior Design.

The project successfully launched the world’s first Fusion Energy Café, a unique venue designed for education and social interaction. The café’s design features finishes and materials that reflect advanced technology, providing an immersive experience.

In addition to offering training in catering and hospitality, the café will create work placements for individuals with disabilities, those who are not currently in education, employment, or training (NEET), and individuals who have been long-term unemployed.

This café serves as an example of collaboration between local businesses and government organisations, promoting public understanding of new technologies while delivering social and economic benefits.

Why SCAPE?

Using the SCAPE framework facilitated early engagement, enabling Lindum to provide more support during the design and cost estimation phases of the project.

This early involvement helped to take a more collaborative approach to both design and budgeting, ultimately helping to keep the project within its budget throughout its duration.

“The Fusion Energy Café will provide a vital link in supporting the skills outreach learning for STEP and STEM, as we look to upskill young people in the district, ready for a range of exciting employment opportunities in the future.”
