Councillor Roger Berry,
Neighbourhood Services and Community Safety Portfolio Holder at Wyre Council
At SCAPE, we are proud to play a pivotal role in safeguarding the coastline of Wyre alongside our Civil Engineering delivery partner, Balfour Beatty. Our commitment to protecting homes and businesses, enhancing biodiversity, and fostering long-term social impact is at the forefront of this project.
The challenges posed by rising sea levels and the impacts of climate change are undeniable. With predictions indicating that over 11,900 homes and businesses in Wyre could be at risk of flooding and erosion, our proactive measures are crucial. We understand that without intervention, significant parts of the borough could be submerged within the next 15 years.
To address these escalating concerns, we partnered with Wyre Council and the Environment Agency to implement the Wyre Beach Management Scheme under the SCAPE Civil Engineering framework and being delivered by Balfour Beatty. This £38.5 million coastal defence initiative is designed to strengthen the existing infrastructure, enhance local biodiversity, and ensure the protection of our communities for generations to come. We are dedicated to making a positive impact and are excited about the future of Wyre's coastline and its residents.
The Wyre Beach Management Scheme is structured in two phases, balancing the need for immediate protection with long-term coastal resilience.
Phase 1 - 2023:
The project team delivered 900 meters of rock toe protection and a precast wall, reinforcing existing sea defences and protecting against immediate risks.
Phase 2 - 2023–2026:
Currently, the project team is constructing 35 new rock groynes using 190,000 tonnes of sustainably sourced granite. New crossover ramps are also being installed to enhance access to the beach for residents, visitors, and maintenance teams.
To ensure that we leave a positive and sustainable legacy for Wyre, Balfour Beatty has developed a bespoke social impact plan aimed at maximising value. This plan includes a focus on biodiversity gains, such as creating new rock pools and bird roosts to support marine life and enhance natural resilience. We also emphasise community impact by delivering £1.7 million in validated social value through apprenticeships, school visits, placements, and volunteering opportunities. These efforts are designed to inspire and promote careers in construction while engaging with local community groups to support learning and participation.
Additionally, we aim to foster a cultural connection by installing themed hoardings and storytelling elements that reflect Wyre’s coastal identity and build local pride.
Economic benefits are also a priority; Balfour Beatty strives to create local jobs, provide training, and engage with our local supply chain, ensuring that our investment in coastal protection supports the regional economy.
