I’ve just been up to the memorial and it looks truly amazing.”

A new World War 1 Roll of Honour Centenary War Memorial commemorating, for the first time, all of those from Nottinghamshire who lost their lives between 1914 and 1919.

The Memorial Gardens, Victoria Embankment has been the location for commemoration in Nottingham for just under a century and is a tranquil space, accessible to all and the ideal setting to accommodate the new memorial.

During the aftermath of the Great War, around 690 memorials were erected in various locations across Nottinghamshire in churches, village halls, schools, sports clubs and other areas. No centralised list was ever gathered and therefore there has been no method to establish whose name is or isn’t included on these memorials. A new memorial was required by Nottingham City Council to enable the people of Nottinghamshire to commemorate and remember the sacrifice that the local community made.

During the construction there was heavy rainfall lasting eight days which resulted in extensive flooding of the site and difficulty in laying the slates. To meet the handover date the site team had to use temporary protective tents which covered the area in which the slates were to be positioned.

The 13,501 names were laser cut onto 270 slates with each slate taking around two hours to be engraved.

The project was completed in just 18 weeks, ready for the visit of HRH Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, who officially unveiled the memorial.

During the construction the local World Triathlon, being held in Nottingham, was taking place along the embankment and the flooding of the River Trent caused serious issues. The site team responded by clearing the site so the event could go ahead.

A £500 cheque was donated to a local horticultural charitable organisation (MeGA). This money will help them to carry out works within Nottingham parks and green spaces.

I passed on our personal thanks to all the team on site, not only for turning this around promptly and expertly, but also for creating an extraordinary monument that will serve the people of Nottinghamshire proud. I would also like to take this opportunity to pass on our thanks to everyone who has worked hard behind the scenes to make this happen. It's been a long journey, quite challenging in places, but we would not have done this without the hard work, dedication and skill of everyone involved.”
