Our commitment to sustainable solutions in the built environment
During spring 2024, SCAPE Group began works with the Carbon Literacy trust to improve its approach to sustainable solutions in the built environment.
SCAPE is a not-for-profit organisation that supports public sector projects through consultancy, construction, civil engineering, and utilities frameworks, with a commitment to compliance, collaboration, and community impact.
Our team is driven to enhance accountability and transparency in our carbon contributions. To do this, we realised our requirement to assess our current position and identify proactive steps we can take to reduce our carbon footprint.
Before the Carbon Literacy course
Our frameworks deliver cutting-edge strategies for sustainable driven projects, leveraging our expertise across four core sectors: consultancy, construction, civil engineering, and utilities.
We acknowledge the pressing climate and ecological crises, and we are committed to collaborating on new-build construction projects that minimise environmental impact. Our focus also extends to decarbonising existing assets and ensuring that both the physical and natural infrastructures in our communities are robust enough to withstand current and future climate-related challenges.
We discovered that 40% of the UK's carbon emissions are attributed to the built environment, and recognised the need to take meaningful action. This discovery encouraged our team to sign up to the Carbon Literacy course, knowing it would provide us with the essential knowledge and insights to accelerate our progress in developing sustainable solutions for the built environment.
During the Carbon Literacy course
We found the Carbon Literacy course incredibly useful as it provided relevant climate change learning that catalysed action within our organisation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
By equipping our staff with the knowledge and tools to make informed decisions, the course has been instrumental in fostering a culture of sustainability. Recognising that cultural change is as vital as technological advancement in achieving the carbon reductions, we have embraced the principles of the Carbon Literacy Project.
With 40% of our staff having completed the course, we are proud to contribute to the growing movement that's vital for the UK.
After the Carbon Literacy course
Following the training, our team committed to sharing their strategies for reducing their carbon footprints and exchanged advice and tips to inspire change among themselves. Sustainability was also chosen as one of our organisational values through a staff engagement workshop at our staff conference in May 2024.
We are excited to continue our sustainable efforts on built environment projects and look forward to bringing awareness to others on effective solutions for building.
Future plans include training the remaining staff and promoting Carbon Literacy principles among partners and clients to make a broader impact.
