Construction Waste Portal - SCAPE’s digital platform for construction waste forecasting - has invested in Green Compass, in a move to take the PAS 402 standard to the next level.

PAS 402 is an elite and unique performance standard for the resource management sector, championed by SCAPE through our Recommended Environmental Standards. We are a proud advocate of the adoption of PAS 402 on public sector projects to demonstrate compliance, and the sustainable handling of construction waste.

The Green Compass Scheme currently provides the only means of gaining UKAS accredited certification to the PAS 402:2013 standard. As a performance standard, PAS 402 is the only waste management-specific standard that requires resource management companies to publish the following:

  • a publicly available, verified annual report, specific to waste handling activities on site
  • externally verified waste recycling and recovery data

In March 2024, Green Compass announced the appointment of an investment consortium of major shareholders and private investors.

Construction Waste Portal Limited, Encore Environment Limited, Go Green Limited, Harmony Environmental Limited, Powerday PLC, United Resource Operators Consortium Limited (UROC), and Williams a Williams Cyf have all been named as shareholders alongside private investors John Logan, Director and Founder of the Construction Waste Portal and Jennifer Watts, CEO at UROC.

Together, the shareholders have industry-leading experience across consultancy, construction, or resource management and will be key to delivering Green Compass’ future plans. This will include a significant review of PAS 402 and a new website.

The investment presents a huge opportunity and with the active support of the new shareholders, we are confident that PAS 402 will gain the increased recognition that it merits, and in a very short time will become the leading standard by which the resource management industry is measured.

Paul Jennings

Managing Director for Green Compass

The PAS 402:2013 standard is being widely accepted as the pinnacle of data validation and performance certification in the resource management sector. In my work with the Construction Waste Portal and as a private investor, it is a privilege to be part of such a visionary group of people who are determined to change the resource management landscape for good and make a real difference.

John Logan

Operations Director at Construction Waste Portal

John continued, "I’m delighted that our combined investment and expertise will be able to further support the great work that the Green Compass Scheme is already doing within the waste management sector."

Demonstrating compliance

PAS 402 ensures that waste data reporting is transparent and accurate, and site activities are as described and compliant with health, safety, environment and quality requirements for the waste industry. Construction Waste Portal has compared PAS402 to ISO 14001 below, available as a free download.

We have a commitment, as a public sector procurement leader, not only to champion the responsible and sustainable handling of construction waste, but to encourage PAS 402’s adoption as a de facto standard in the resource management industry.

Chris Clarke

Performance and Improvement Director at SCAPE and Director at Construction Waste Portal

Chris continued, "together with the Construction Waste Portal as a digitally enabling tool, and our investment in quality performance standards like PAS 402, at SCAPE we’re proud to be championing the serious changes needed to predict, plan and prevent construction waste, and support the circular economy.”

Chris will be speaking more about this at FOOTPRINT+ in May, and welcomes discussions on our stand, B8.
