An extra care scheme for vulnerable adults, allowing individuals to live safely and independently within a supported setting.

Bristol Court is the first extra care housing scheme to be developed within the borough by Hounslow Housing directly, located in Feltham.

London Borough of Hounslow had experienced increased demand for supported housing and assisted living for over 60s, and wanted to provide a purpose-built facility within the borough itself rather than having to send its residents outside the borough.

There are no similar schemes that mix the varying needs of its residents, from those who want to benefit from assisted living and improved social setting, to those living with learning disabilities, or dementia.

Overview
Requirements

The scheme is designed to allow residents to live in their own home, assisted with social care support within close proximity, avoiding the need to move into a residential or nursing home, specifically to reduce demand on social care and health services.

There are a total of 94 homes (86 one-bedroom and 8 two-bedroom), each with their own bedroom, accessible shower room, lounge, and modern kitchen. Nine flats are adapted for wheelchair users, and each apartment has access to either a private patio or balcony.

The building includes a number of additional facilities to serve the needs of the residents, including a reception area, restaurant, activity rooms, gardens and communal lounges. The apartments have been designed for individual and independent living and afford separate access to the apartments, but also are easily accessible to support staff.

The design of the scheme is based around the needs of future residents and meets Lifetime Homes and HAPPI principles (Housing our Ageing Population: Panel for Innovation).

Support for those with dementia

There are 12 homes providing specialist dementia support, which have been designed to ensure the colour scheme, fixtures and layout provide a dementia friendly environment. Amenities include a dedicated dementia garden and communal lounges.

Support for those with learning disabilities

There are 15 homes (including 2 two-bedroom) around a communal garden providing specialist support for residents with learning disabilities. Other amenities include a communal lounge and Changing Places facility.

We have been pleased with the sensitive and responsive approach to working on a heavily contaminated site in a residential area."
