The Cardea Community Pavilion provides residents and community groups with access to sports changing rooms, an assembly hall and kitchen, as well as flexible meeting room facilities.

The building provides a central area, where users can come together. Located next to existing playing fields, the facilities offer a convenient and practical space where local sporting groups can meet.

The building was designed to have low maintenance and running costs, which was achieved using a variety of solutions including the installation of energy efficient ventilation and heating systems.

With the site located close to a village centre and next to a large housing development, community liaison was vital to ensure local residents and small businesses were kept informed, and that minimal disruption was caused throughout delivery.

Through the open book tender mechanism adopted by empa, Clegg Construction engaged with a wide range of local businesses and SMEs, who came together to deliver the project to the agreed budget and timescales.

With stringent timescales to match the clients’ funding source, the project required a tight specification and efficient delivery which ensured all parties remained informed and updated.

This included the liaison with stakeholders, other contractors and supply chain partners and the local community.

With the site located close to a village centre and next to a large housing development, community liaison was vital to ensure the programme ran smoothly during delivery.

Regular updates to residents and local businesses kept them informed, and ensured minimal disruption was caused.

The new community centre was delivered to the agreed timescales and budget, with its energy efficient and sustainable design ensuring the client achieves consistent value for money throughout the lifecycle of the building.

Initially the building had been designed with a traditional timber truss roof, however value engineering revealed that this could lead to maintenance issues with the serving of the air handling units and make them impossible to replace. With this in mind, an alternative was devised and installed, that allows for easy maintenance and delivers additional value for money for the client.

The social value created from the new community centre helped to support skills and training in the area, by providing work experience placements for two students from Peterborough College. They worked alongside the site management team to gain practical skills and experience working on a live construction site.

Among those using the building are several local sports teams. Clegg Construction sponsored one local team, the under 11s Park Farm Pumas, who use the facility for training and competitive matches. They were also given a new kit, which they are delighted with and which has allowed the small club to focus their limited funds on other essentials for the team.
