Kier announce SCAPE Hub Administrator of the Year
Robyn Quinn, who works for the Scottish Kier Regional Building business, recently won SCAPE Hub Administrator of the Year award. This prestigious award is testament to Robyn's hard work and dedication to the Minor Works framework and its projects in Scotland and the North East. Robyn manages the process from project inception to successful project delivery.
"I am often asked by people what it is like to work within the built environment and the answer is that it is truly fascinating and also hugely rewarding, as we are enriching communities with new infrastructure."
Working with skilled teams to deliver projects through the SCAPE National Minor Works framework across Scotland and the North East of England, I have helped deliver over 25 projects, including NHS Highland Raigmore Helipad Works, University of Edinburgh David Hume Tower, Northumberland County Council Hexham Priory SEN School and Department of International Development’s Abercrombie House.
Through this framework, it is not just the buildings that we are creating, but we are helping to enrich the communities in which we build.
Over the last year, we have held community engagement programmes with local residents, highlighted the breadth of careers available within the built environment and provided over 45 work experience programmes and 18 job opportunities. We also look to support our skilled and specialist supply chain and look to work with local suppliers, where possible. My role is mainly office based but I work closely with our project teams on all our live SCAPE projects in the region to ensure we are on top of our performance indicators. The key to success in my role is organisation and communication which allows me to get to know and build strong relationships with lots of different people. I enjoy that each week I speak to people from across our Hub region from Newcastle to Aberdeen. Building these personal contacts gives me the confidence to speak to site managers or contract managers, to ask questions and ensure our projects are running smoothly. I connect with our SCAPE team each month to ensure we have up to date reporting on things like the number of people we have on site, our work with subcontractors and importantly our social impact in the local area to the project.
"I didn’t originally think of construction as something I wanted to go into for my career but after taking on a job as an administration assistant in the industry, I realised that I really enjoyed it and from there I went on to be a sales and estimating assistant and then onto this role at Kier."
In my role, it’s really important to be very organised, helping the project team to stick to deadlines and ensuring we have document control for each project.
Since starting at Kier in December 2017, I’m really proud of becoming a Construction Ambassador with CITB – Go Construct. This qualification gives me the opportunity to talk to young people, before they have decided their chosen career path to educate and encourage the younger generation, including young women, of the vast roles available within our industry, both out on site and in the office. The built environment for me is a thriving sector to work in, as it continues to evolve with innovative ideas meaning each week is different!
"I am delighted to have won the SCAPE Hub Administrator of the Year award. I didn’t expect to win as there are a lot of SCAPE Hubs, across the country so I was really surprised and it is a real honour."
Some of the feedback I have received from my colleagues, the wider SCAPE team and on social media is heartwarming and I am looking forward to working with the Kier team and the SCAPE team on more exciting projects.
